I broke my first computer in 1978, when the University of Missouri administrative mainframe declared me dead, and the Registrar's office insisted I must be deceased because "the computer could not make that kind of mistake".
I decided I'd never touch a computer as long as I lived.
My graduate degree is in community development. I got involved in using Internet tools to help people learn, and to talk about what they've learned, and that was the end of my moratorium on computers.
I have had the incredibly good fortune to get paid for working on things I enjoy, mostly Websites in various parts of the world. I've worked for for-profits, nonprofits, anti-profits (though they weren't doing that deliberately), huge corporations, small businesses, startups, medical organizations, software companies, crisis services, artists, governments, universities, kooks, geniuses, and feral cats. I am now a developer with the Web Team for King County, Washington.
