Ann Arbor resident Albert Benjamin Howard was a write-in candidate for the Republican presidential nomination for 2008. Inspired by a 1992 visit from the Angel of the Lord, who told Howard that he would run against and defeat Hillary Clinton in 2008, the self-employed chauffeur has registered for the New Hampshire primary ballot and is campaigning in Iowa.

Howard's platform is strongly religious, though opposed to organized churches, and has isolationist and libertarian elements, including closing the Federal Reserve and IRS, and withdrawing from the United Nations.

Howard challenged incumbent mayor John Hieftje as an independent in 2012 and lost, receiving just over 15% of the vote.
