Burns-Stokes Preserve is a 29 acre preserve sandwiched between the Huron River and the railroad. River shoreline makes up the entire southern edge of the preserve, about three-quarters of a mile, and almost all of the property is forested. Other features are sedge meadows, two prairie remnants along the railroad tracks, a stone tepee ring built by the former owners, and portions of an old mill dam and race.
Located within the state Natural Rivers protection zone, this land has been a wildlife area since 1980 and was acquired through the Washtenaw County Natural Areas Preservation Program in 2005. The information stand in the parking lot explains the preserve's history as the center of an old mill town called Scio Village.
