At the scene, firefighters were pouring water on the blazing building. Fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars blocked off State Street and South University. Fire policemen (older members of fire companies who no longer could hold hoses or climb ladders) were authoritatively working to restrain the growing crowd of students and townspeople from getting too close to the inferno.
