K. Ingrid Ault was executive director of the nonprofit Think Local First from 2008 to 2014 – a part-time position. She also worked part-time at The Peaceable Kingdom, a Main Street retailer. From October 2005 to May 2006 Ault served as interim director of the Ypsilanti Downtown and Depot Town Development Authority.

Ault served on several city of Ann Arbor boards and commissions. She was appointed to the park advisory commission for a term from May 7, 2012 to May 6, 2015, and served one year as chair starting in September 2013. During her tenure on PAC she chaired a downtown park subcommittee that developed recommendations for how the city should handle its urban parks and plazas. She also was on the city's housing and human services advisory board from March 1, 2010 to March 1, 2013, and was reappointed from April 15, 2013 to March 31, 2016.

For Washtenaw County, Ault was appointed to the board of the Washtenaw Economic Development Corp. in 2009.

In June 2014, Ault took a job as an educator with the Michigan State University Extension in Calhoun County, Michigan, based in Marshall. She commuted from Ann Arbor to Marshall through the summer, and remained as chair of PAC during that time. She resigned her positions on local boards and commissions after completing her move to Marshall.

In 2011, she was a candidate in the Ann Arbor Third Ward Democratic primary for city council in a three-way race with incumbent Stephen Kunselman and Marwan Issa. She came in second to Kunselman, who got 59% of the votes. 

Ault grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from Pioneer High School, then earned her undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University and a master's degree in urban & regional planning, also from Eastern.
