John Dingell - Ann Arbor

John D. Dingell, Jr. (July 8, 1926 - ) is currently the Dean (longest-serving member) of the US House of Representatives. He is the 2nd longest serving Representative ever and the 4th longest serving Congressman ever. Since 1955, he has represented a district that was first in Detroit but has successfully moved further into Detroit's western suburbs, currently the 15th congressional district of the state of Michigan. The 15th district includes Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and the rest of eastern Washtenaw County, as well as Dearborn, Taylor, Romulus, and Monroe.

In February 2014, Dingell announced that he would not seek re-election to the House.

With the Democrats' victory in the 2006 midterm elections, Dingell again became chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, a panel he previously chaired from 1981 to 1995. His position as the senior member of the house and as Chair of this committee give him significant power - power which was displayed in the summer of 2007 in a showdown with Congressional leadership. Although Dingell was one of the authors of the original CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) legislation, he disagreed with Speaker Pelosi on how to best increase it. He produced compromise legislation in December 2007, which raised CAFE for the first time in roughly 30 years.

Dingell is known for his conservation efforts, including authoring or helping to author the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammals Protection Act. He is also the major force in the House for universal healthcare coverage, with two bills, HR 15 and HR 2034. He has introduced HR 15 every year since coming to Congress, as his father did before him.
