Holland, John Venice, FL Formerly of Ann Arbor, MI John M. Holland, age 86, died February 11, 2010 at home in Venice, FL. A respected community leader,award-winning civil engineer, and beloved father and grandfather, he will be sorely missed. He was born July 5, 1923, to Alma Schmid and Howard Kingsbury Holland in Ann Arbor. Mr. Holland, like his father and uncle, studied at the University of Michigan to be an engineer. After serving as a Navy pilot in World War II, Mr. Holland graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948. In 1949, he began his thirty-six year career at the engineering firm that came to be known as McNamee, Porter and Seeley, where he became Managing Partner in 1976. In his work as an engineer, he developed public water projects in munici-palities all over Michigan, New York, and Indiana. Among other positions, he served as President of the Ann Arbor chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, and Chairman and Board member of the Michigan section of the American Water Works Association, representing the Michigan section on the national AWWA board. He received the prestigious George Warren Fuller Memorial Award in 1979 for services to the water industry. In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Holland was active in serving his community. He was a past President of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club, and at the time of his death was its longest serving member. He held leadership positions in the Ann Arbor United Way, Ann Arbor Jaycees, Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, Forest Hill Cemetery Board, First Congregational Church, and Perry School Nursery. He also served on the board of Ann Arbor Trust. He was an avid private pilot, and he loved water sports of all kinds, including water-skiing up until his 75th birthday! Mr. Holland touched many lives with his kind heart and generous spirit. As a father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, colleague and friend, his impact was immeasurable and he will never be forgotten. Mr. Holland is survived by his daughters, Carol Holland White (Charles) and Barbara Holland (Stephen Hopkins) and son, Jay Holland (Patti). Grandchildren are: Sarah White Trembley (Todd), Jana White Micomonaco (Justin), Miriam White Gin (Matt), Hugh White, Jeffrey Holland (Melissa), Mary Beth Holland, and Michael Hopkins. There are two great-grandsons and a third expected to be born any day. Mr. Holland is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and his dear friend Virginia Kucharski. There will be a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20th, at the First Congregational Church, 608 East William, Ann Arbor. The Family will also receive visitors 4-8 p.m. Friday at Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church or the Ann Arbor Rotary Endowment.
