Nelson K. Meade (b. 1927, d. 2018) served as a Democrat on the Ann Arbor City Council representing Ward 3 from April 1971 to April 1973 and again from April 1989 to February 1993.

Obituary

Nelson Kay Meade, a dearly loved long time resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and well known public figure, who served the community greatly throughout his life, passed away peacefully at age 91, Monday June 11, 2018. He was born in Detroit, MI. He served in the US Army during WW2. He received a Bachelor's degree in History from Wayne State University and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from University of Michigan. In his adult life he was Administrator of the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, worked on the Tecumseh Health Study, philanthropically served many terms as Ann Arbor Third Ward City Councilman in the 1970's and 1990's, was influential in the creation of Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation and was on the Parks Commission for 40 years serving many positions over time. He helped with the initiation and development of Project Grow Community Gardens and Packard Community Health Clinic that offered service no matter racial/cultural background or ability to pay, and served on both Commissions. He also served on Ann Arbor City Planning Commission, and was a Trail Building Volunteer and Camp Chef on Sierra Club National Parks trips around the country. He put his full self into everything he was part of. The Nelson Meade County Farm Park is named in his honor. This is just some of his legacy and displays the impact he has had on this community and the people who knew him. He will be dearly missed. Survived by his loving wife Catherine of 53 years, his children Holly Laura Meade and Paul B. Stapler, granddaughter Alandra Meade, siblings Eugene Meade of La Mesa AZ, Joann Watson of Hill NH, Roger Meade of Ishpeming MI, Sandra Grudzen of Lutz, FL, plus many neices and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Ivan D Meade and Eleanor Kuck, siblings Marvin Meade and Alan Meade.

A 'Celebration of His Life' Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28 at 1:00 pm at the Nelson Meade County Farm Park, 2230 Platt Road, Ann Arbor, MI, under the pavilions.
