Rice A. Beal (d. 1883) was a retired lumber baron when he purchased all of the rights to Alvan Wood Chase's Dr. Chase’s Recipes; or, Information for Everybody, in 1869. The purchase agreement included a non-compete agreement, and when Chase returned to Ann Arbor in 1873 with a new Dr. Chase's Family Physician, Farrier, Bee-Keeper, and Second Receipt Book Being an Entirely New & Complete Treatise and a new newspaper the Ann Arbor Register, Beal sued to shut him down. He won the suit in 1875.
Rice was the father of Junius Beal, and builder of the now-demolished Beal House.
