Rob Goodspeed is a 2004 graduate of the University of Michigan. At that point, his site The Goodspeed Update was one of the most prominent blogs in Ann Arbor; Goodspeed had previously resigned/been fired from the Michigan Daily over an editorial policy dispute, and brought his journalistic bent to blogging. He also served on Ann Arbor's Cool Cities Task Force. After graduating, Goodspeed moved to Washington DC and then Boston, where he co-founded the blogs DCist and Rethink College Park and earned a Master's degree from the University of Maryland and a PhD from MIT, both in urban planning.

Goodspeed returned to Ann Arbor in Fall 2013 as an Assistant Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
