Fair trade goods are those that are produced by people being paid fair wages in a healthy environment. This is opposed to situations in many peripheral nations where people work very long hours for wages that may barely support family. Many products bought at large retailers are made by taking advantage of cheap labor in the global system. In addition, many fair trade products are made with special attention towards ensuring the natural ecosystems in the area are not damaged. The Chico Peace & Justice Center is currently trying to make Chico one of the first ten fair trade towns in California by the end of 2008. On May 10th, 2008, San Francisco was the first to achieve fair trade town status in California. Here are some locations to purchase or consume fair trade goods.
