A small portion of the Mendocino National Forest is in Chico. The 209 acre Genetic Resource & Conservation Center (GRCC), often referred to as the Dog Park and Tree Farm, technically is a tree nursery for genetically superior trees grown from seeds collected all over the north state. The GRCC allows visitors of the two legged and four legged variety so long as they are leashed. The leash policy began March 5th, 2010, in response to Butte County Ordinance 4-1. Before the policy, dogs only had to be leashed on the paved nature trail.
