Lookout Point, bought by Butte County in 2007, is infamous for being a location where countless cars, and sadly their drivers, have plummeted into the canyon cut by Butte Creek. The Chico ER stated that since 1990, at least "13 occupied vehicles" plunged into the canyon — 9 had died.1 Indeed, suicide was very problematic but its original owners did not want to close it off to drivers, so Butte County cut a deal and purchased the land. It is now blocked off and being developed into a safe scenic lookout point. To that end, on May 23, 2008, Butte County removed 52 wrecked vehicles using a contracted Boeing Vertol helicopter. The last cleanup in the mid-1980s removed 32 vehicles.2 The improved lookout point was opened in the Fall of 2008.
