According to the US Census Bureau's 2000 data, it has a population of over 400,000, although it has many suburbs that are a part of the greater Sacramento area which are not included in that count. Sacramento is located approximately 100 miles to the south of Chico, and can be accessed by Highway 99 or Interstate 5.

Many in Chico travel to Sacramento for shopping, entertainment, and other amenities that cannot be found in town. With only about a two hour drive, it is a popular day-trip destination. In addition, the Sacramento International Airport is the nearest large airport nearby.
