Denton is so freakin' popular that it gets mentioned in culture.

  • The City of Denton is where Brad proposes to Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and is also called "The Home of Happiness" on a billboard in the first scene of the movie in the churchyard. For a brief time in the early 1990's, a billboard was in place along I-35 north of the city that said the same thing, erected each year before Halloween.  RHPS is shown every year at UNT by FMLA, Glad, and UPC.
  • The American indie rock band, The Mountain Goats have a song titled "The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" on their album "All Hail West Texas."
  • White Lilacs, a novel written by Carolyn Meyer, depicts the removal and struggle of the residents of Quakertown, though all character names and other specifics have been changed.
  • The Courthouse-on-the-Square is seen in the 1982 Dolly Parton film Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
  • Denton is occassionally mentioned in King of the Hill.  Hank says, "Peggy, I've already chosen the country for our summer vacation, America. And the state, Texas. And the town, Denton. I don't care what their police did to that cyclist. It's still a great town."
  • Part of the 1974 film Benji was filmed in Denton.
  • The 1994 music video for the Meat Loaf song "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer than they Are", which originally appeared on the album "Bat of Hell II: Back into Hell", was filmed in and around Denton.
  • The Morrison's Corn-Kits building appears with altered text on the cover of the Fishboy album Little D.
  • The Campus Theatre hosted the world premier of Bonnie and Clyde, with Warren Beatty in attendance.
  • Norah Jones, Grammy Award-winning artist, was named the Honorary Chairwoman of Save Fry Street on December 21, 2006.
  • The 1991 comedy film Necessary Roughness starring Scott Bakula and Sinbad was partially shot in Denton.  The UNT campus was used as a stand-in for the movie's "Texas State" college during the filming of the college and football scenes.
  • Some of the establishing shots of the somewhat famous movie "Armageddon" took place in Denton.
  • Some of the movie "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, was shot in Denton.

  • Reference from the TV Series LOST: Judith Martha Wexler, a resident of Denton, Texas, was a passenger on Oceanic Flight 815 who died in the crash. She wore corrective lenses and she was planning on being an organ donor. She was also catching a connecting flight. She was mentioned byClaire as she read some of the names of the dead when the fuselage was burned in "Walkabout."
