Keith Johnson is the president of the DFT.

On Wednesday, September 1 2010 the DFT filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Public Schools claiming the district purposely hired candidates from outside the district instead of equally qualified internal candidates. Most of the contested hirings were at 40 schools that had significant staff changes over the summer. The DFT hopes to reinstate teachers who were forced to vacate and re-interview for their jobs. It is unclear if the teachers were fired.

The Federation has also sued DPS over hiring 20-30 Teach for America candidates in 2010.
