Portions of the Urban League's 1918 survey Negro-Newcomers in Detroit are [http://books.google.com/books?id=mo0hEaThzc4C available online through Google Books. The study documents the expansion of job opportunities for African Americans through the 1910s, and also noted the large racial divisions that still remained, including the menial work and segregation.
