The Kresge Foundation has taken an active role in major Detroit-area development projects. They provided the early major funding for the Detroit Works Project and are heavily invested in Woodward Light Rail. Rip Rapson is President and CEO.
Some see the extent of their activity in local government as supplanting or influencing decisions that should be made by elected officials.
