Ossian Sweet was an African American physician who became nationally famous for purchasing a home in an all white neighborhood in Detroit in 1925 and defending it against the threat of violence. In a remarkable victory, he, his family, and his friends were acquitted of murder by an all white jury.

The Ossian H. Sweet House, located at 2905 Garland Street, still stands today in fair condition. It entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
