Arthur Duncan Moir, Jr. came to Saranac Lake around age five, when the family relocated for the health of his sister Jean. At the time of his mother's death in about 1936, he was superintendent of the forestry service in the state of Washington. He is mentioned in Young Men and Fire, by Norman Maclean (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1992) as supervisor of the Helena (Montana) National Forest in August of 1949, the time of the Mann Gulch fire.
