Chiefly known for: A former patient at Trudeau Sanatorium, where she became friends with Lilo Levine, Cathy Pendergast is also a nurse. Born in the U.S., she grew up in Ireland, where she graduated from Loretto Convent Balbriggan and Mater Misericordiae Hospital School of Nursing, both in Dublin. After graduating, she lived in England, where she worked at Tunbridge Wells, a private hospital where each nurse had only two patients to care for. She returned to the U.S. in 1948 and worked at Lenox Hospital and Bellevue in New York City. Cathy came to Saranac Lake to cure from tuberculosis, and met her husband, Edward, here. After curing, she lived in Saranac Lake for 43 years, working at Trudeau, Sunmount Veterans Hospital and then Sunmount, DDSO, after the Veterans' Hospital closed. For a time in 2007, Cathy returned to live at Saranac Village at Will Rogers to recover from an automobile accident; she later moved to Ireland to be near her son Jim and two grandsons.
