Daniel S. Foster came to Saranac Lake in 1894 and started a trucking business. In 1915 he was elected village trustee. He served as village trustee until 1921, serving as village president from 1921 to 1923 inclusive. He was elected supervisor of the town of Harrietstown in 1929, serving three successive terms. In 1935 was appointed as postmaster.

Daniel S. Foster Dies After Fall Down Staircase
Daniel S. Foster, 69, postmaster of this village since 1935 and resident of the community for 47 years, died of a broken neck at 3 o'clock this morning at his home alter he had apparently tripped and fell down the staircase. He was killed instantly.
According to members of his family, Mr. Foster usually got up during the early morning hours to get a light snack in the kitchen. He hadn't turned the lights on when he started down the stairs this morning and apparently plunged down the stairs after taking a misstep. He struck his head at the bottom of the staircase, doubling him up and breaking his neck.
Mr. Foster had been feeling well last night when he went out for dinner, according to his family. He had supper at the Elks club at about 6 o'clock and returned home about 9. He retired soon after returning home. At 3 this morning, after he had gotten up again, his wife, Mrs. Emma S. Foster, was awakened by the sound of the fall. She immediately called her two daughters, Mrs. Ignatius J. Neubauer and Mrs. Madeline Ward, and her son-in-law, Mayor Thomas P. Ward. Mr. Ward was the first to arrive and declared that death seemed to have come instantly.

Mr. Foster was born in Redford on October 16, 1871, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Foster. He came to Saranac Lake in 1894, where he started a trucking business, which is still being conducted here. In 1895 he married Mrs. Emma Snow and had three daughters, two of whom survive. In 1915 he was elected village trustee. He served as trustee until 1921, serving as president of the village from 1921 to 1923 inclusive. He was elected supervisor of the town of Harrietstown in 1929, serving three successive terms. In 1935 he received the appointment as postmaster here and held the position until his death. He had also been a delegate to the electoral college from this district in 1932.
The deceased was a member of the Elks lodge here, the Knights of Columbus and St. Bernard's church. He was active in Democratic party affairs here.

PROMINENT COUNTY CITIZEN KILLED IN FALL AT SARANAC
Dan S. Foster, 70, Saranac Lake postmaster and a leading Franklin County politician, died from a broken neck suffered in a fall down the stairs at his home at 4 a. m. Friday. Coroner William A. Wardner gave a verdict of accidental death.
Mr. Foster who was in good health arose early apparently to get a snack from the kitchen and neglecting to put on the light, missed his footing on the stairs. His fall awakened Mrs. Foster.
Long a prominent political figure the deceased served as a Democratic member of the electoral college in 1932. He was first appointed postmaster in November 1935. He was a past president of Saranac Lake village and served as supervisor of his town from 1930 to 1936.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus council, the Elks lodge, the Moose lodge and a director of the Saranac Lake Sports association.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Madeline Ward, wife of Mayor Thomas P. Ward, and Mrs. Eleanor Neubauer; a brother and a sister.
