Aged Member of Well Known Family Passes Away at Home
FUNERAL THURSDAY MORNING
Was born in Alburg, Vt., Seventy-One Years Ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Latour, and one of Fourteen children-Lived at Many Places in Northern New York in Past Fifty Years
Elisha Latour, one of Saranac Lake’s best known citizen’s, died this morning at 6 o’clock after an illness of ten days from paralytic stroke. His death removes a figure well known in many communities in Northern New York, where he has spent the greater part of his life.
Mr. Latour was born in Alburg, Vt. On April 19, seventy-one years ago. He was one of fourteen children of Mr. and Mrs. John Latour. Of those fourteen, only two are living, Tuffield Latour of Saranac Lake and Mrs. Delia Tatro of Clarenceville, PQ.
Elisha Latour as a young man learned the meat business, and when he came to this state at the age of twenty or thereabouts, he settled at Chateaugay, where he worked at that business. Shortly afterward he married Frona Jarvis of North Burke, who survives him. To the couple were born six children, of whom two daughters, Mrs. Dennis Hayes and Mrs. William Gibney, and one son John Latour, are still living.
Later Mr. Latour and his family went to Ellenberg, Clinton County, where he continued in the meat business, but it was not long before Tuffield Latour, who had settled in Bloomingdale, induced his brother to go to that place. Twenty-eight years ago Elisha Latour opened a meat business in Bloomingdale, and for a time he furnished many St. Regis campers with supplies.
The family came to Saranac Lake 24 years ago. It was not until last summer that Mr. Latour gave up his work, owing to decreasing strength. Ten days ago he suffered a slight stroke, and on Tuesday this was followed by a second shock. He gradually failed until the end at his home, 167 Broadway, the same house in which his brother, Edward, breathed his last four years ago.
Elisha Latour was best known to all men as one of the most honest that ever lived. He was a home loving man, of kindly disposition, and with great love for his wife and children. He leaves a wide circle of friends to mourn his loss. He was a member of St. Bernard's Church, and the funeral will be held from that edifice, probably Thursday morning. Supervisor James A. Latour, a nephew, who is in Albany on county business, was notified by telegraph this morning of his uncle’s death, and is expected home tomorrow.
