Elizabeth E. Root, 77, formerly of Saranac Lake, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at the Allen-Calder Nursing Home in New Hartford. Born in Saranac Lake on Jan. 16, 1927, she was the daughter of Dorchester and Corine (Mitchell) Everett. Mrs. Root graduated from St. Lawrence University and was employed as a physical therapist.
She later owned and operated the Lone Pine Camp in Paul Smiths with her husband William. She was an active member of St. Luke's Church and had been a member of the Guild. She also volunteered at St. Luke's Budget Box for many years. Betty was a long-time resident of Saranac Lake before moving to Utica in 1998. She is survived by two sons: James Root and his wife Vicki of Massapequa Park and William Root of Lake Placid; two grandsons: Daniel and Timmy Root of Massapequa Park; and a sister, Nancy Forbes and her husband Al of Whitesboro. She was predeceased by her husband William on Feb. 29, 1980 and her parents.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 1 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2 at the Church of St. Luke the Beloved Physician in Saranac Lake with the Rev. Frederick Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Paul Smiths. Friends wishing to remember Betty may make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or the Allen-Calder Nursing Home in care of the funeral home.
