Ella Kummerling was decorated by the British and Dutch governments for her work in World War II. She lived at 119 Forest Hill Avenue after 1945. She also was an accomplished pianist, and was active in the Study and Craft Guild.

Ella Kummerling
Mrs. Ella Kummerling, who had lived in Saranac Lake since 1945, died Sunday at Uihlein Mercy Center where she had been a resident for two years. She was 97 years of age.
Mrs. Kummerling was the widow of Dr. Heinrich Kummerling who was a specialist in internal medicine in Vienna, Austria. They were married on Oct. 18, 1896. in Vienna.
She was born Jan. 28, 1873 in Austria, a daughter of Adolph and Paula Mosmann Taussig. Her father was a journalist, head of the economics department of the leading Austrian paper, and founder of the first woman's organization and magazine in which Mrs. Kummerling assisted him.
During World War I, Mrs. Kummerling translated a whole library in two languages into Braille and in World War II, she was decorated by the British and Dutch governments for work with the allied forces. She received the decoration at Curacao, the Netherlands West Indies.
In Saranac Lake she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ilse Gronemeyer and her husband, Dr. Carl Gronemeyer at 119 Forest Hill Avenue. She was active here in the Study and Craft Guild and she helped the Saranac Lake Hospital Auxiliary.
She also was an accomplished pianist and, in Vienna, had played chamber music with members of the Vienna Philharmonic.
In addition to her daughter, survivors are: a sister, Mrs. Otto Zebler of Vienna; two nephews, Waiter Taussig of New York City, associate conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, and Arthur Weisner of Miami, Fla.; a niece. Dr. Herta Fritag, professor at Hollins College Va.; a great-nephew. Dr. Rudolph Schier professor at the University of Illinois; and three great-grand nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Fortune Funeral Home on Wednesday evening. The funeral will be held there at 7:30 p. m. Wednesday with the Rev. Max Coots, of the Unitarian-Universalist Church In Canton, conducting the service. Cremation will follow in Troy.
Mrs. Kummerling's family requests that friends wishing to remember her make donations to Uihlein Mercy center.
