FITZ OTIS IS HOME FROM SERVICE OVERSEAS
Lake Clear Man Was in Army Year and a Half—In France 18 Months.
Fitz Edward G. Otis has returned to his home at Lake Clear Junction after a year and a half in the army, sixteen months of that time having been spent in France. He was with the 20th Engineers, enlisting after failing several times.
He went to Camp Devens and was sent to Camp American University. He left for France January 5, 1918, sailing on the transport Pastores. The convoy which was to meet the transports was several hours behind schedule and so gave an opportunity for an attack by three submarines. Two of the U-boats were sunk, but the third escaped.
Mr. Otis landed at St. Nazairo, March 4. His unit was attached to the French army which he served until February 1, 1919, doing forest engineering work. Then the unit joined the American army and was engaged in construction work. Mr. Otis returned on the steamer Kroonland and was discharged at Camp Upton, June 5.

Fitz-Edward Otis
SARANAC LAKE - Fitz-Edward Otis, 84, of 20 Church Street died Friday evening at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.
Mr. Otis was a 40-year resident of Saratoga Springs and moved to Saranac Lake two years ago.
He was born in Lake Clear, a son of Sidney and Ellen (Whitman) Otis.
His wife, the former Gertrude Bromley, died in July.
Survivors include his son, Maurice of Saranac Lake, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Otis attended the University of Michigan and majored in forestry. He was employed by the Department of Environmental Conservation for 33 years as a forest nursery foreman at Lake Clear, Horseheads and Saratoga Springs and retired in 1958.
A World War I veteran, he was a 59-year member and past post commander of the American Legion, Adirondack Post No. 70, in Saratoga Springs. He was also a past Saratoga County commander. Mr. Otis was a member of the fourth-degree Knights of Columbus No. 246 in Saratoga Springs.
A Bible Vigil was said Sunday evening at the Fortune Funeral Home with members of the Knights of Columbus attending.
A Mass of Christian Burial was said this morning at St. Bernard's Church, with the Rev. C. J. McAvoy officiating.
Interment services are at 2 p.m. today at St. Peter's Cemetery in Saratoga Springs.
