Frank Westley Merritt was the Head of the English department at Bucknell University.

Sumac YMA Gets Prize For Short Story
Unusual literary honors have come to Frank Merritt of Saranac Lake in winning first prize for short story writing in a national contest in which students at 2,000 American high schools competed.
A jury composed of four leading figures in the short story and novel field awarded Mr. Merritt first place among the thousands of manuscripts submitted. They are Edward J. O'Brien, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Percival Hunt and Helen Ferris.
A prize of $50 accompanied the high literary honor. The competition is sponsored by Scholastic, American high school weekly for creative effort in art and literature. An International Scholastic Art exhibit opened yesterday at Carnegie institute, Pittsburg, and includes a literary division in which Mr. Merritt's manuscript is included.
Saturday of this week is the publication date of a special, student- written issue of "Scholastic" an anthology of high school student writing, in which his story will appear.
His short story is entitled "A Game of Checkers," and was one of two submitted by the young author.

Merritt is the editor of the Royal Gaboon, Hamilton campus comic magazine and is a varsity debator. He was inducted recently into Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternity. He is a member of Delta Upsilon.........

Hamilton College......Frank W. Merritt of Saranac Lake, one of the members of the senior class who is to be graduated Monday, was appointed for one year as instructor in public speaking with the Hamilton faculty.
Merritt will continue work he has done during the past year as undergraduate assistant in public speaking, and will combine his teaching with studies leading toward a doctorate.

There was a news story yesterday about the appointment of Dr. Frank W. Merritt as director of the Bucknell University summer session. Dr. Merritt is professor of speech at Bucknell. It is interesting to note that not only did he graduate from the Saranac Lake High School, as reported yesterday, but he did so after taking his courses in bed as a TB patient of Dr. Edward Packard. His mother is Mrs. Frank Merritt, of Saranac Lake and he is married to the former Priscilla Steenken, sister of Dr. William Steenken, Jr.
