GEORGE STEARNS GETS MEDICAL DISCHARGE

PM 1-c George L. Stearns, is home from more than a year's oversea's service during which time he saw some of the heaviest fighting of the war in the Central and South Pacific. He is a brother of Mrs. Edward Ware of this village.

He has received a medical discharge because of wounds received in action and he has returned to Saranac Lake to continue his recuperation at the home of his mother, Mrs. George Stearns. The young man is a former bobsledder who has been in service with the navy since 1942.

Stearns was for many months with the famous Fourth division of the marine corps that took part in many of the South Pacific battles. While serving on the Marshall and Marianas islands and again at Saipan, Stearns ran into his former sled mates of the Saranac Lake Bobsled club, Tuffield LaTour and Sgt. James Bickford. Both of the men are still on duty in the Pacific.

Stearns trained at the naval hospital in Brooklyn and took specialized work in X-ray in New York.
