George S. Doty, Jr., was a decorated World War II Veteran, a businessman, and a sportsman who was an early inductee into the Saranac Lake Sports Hall of Fame.

SARANAC LAKE—Mrs. George S. Doty has heard from her son, Corp. George Doty, who was slightly wounded in action. He writes of his joy at getting away from Okinawa which he considers the worst battle of the Pacific. He claims that he often felt like running madly anywhere just to get away from the shells.

To old-timers in the Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake area the name of George Doty will bring back many exciting memories of the field of sport, George is one of a handful of men, down through the years, who have earned letters in four sports. He was a "60 minute man" in football; was rarely pulled in a hockey game and still holds the all-time batting average at Saranac Lake High School.
Mr. Doty was graduated from S. L. H. S. in 1940 and entered the Armed Forces as a member of the local National Guard.

George S. Doty
GOUVERNEUR - George S. Doty, 78, of 285 Clinton St., died Sunday Aug. 20, 2000, at Edward John Noble Hospital, Gouverneur. Mr. Doty was a route salesman at Kinney Drugs for a time and then was a stockbroker for more than 25 years. He retired from E.F. Hutton in 1987.
Born Nov. 20, 1921, in Vermontville, he was a son of George and Doris Tyler Doty. He graduated, in 1940 from Saranac Lake High School, where he excelled in football and baseball, earning All-America honors.
In 1987, he was inducted into the Saranac Lake Sports Hall of Fame at the hall's second annual banquet.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army from 1940 to 1945, seeing duty in the South Pacific islands. He was injured in Okinawa and was awarded the Purple Heart. Because of his military service, he missed a tryout for the New York Yankees farm system baseball teams.
He married Grace Kerr on Sept. 25, 1948, in. St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Montreal, Quebec. Mr. Doty was a member, past president and zone chairman of the Gouverneur Lions Club, a member of the Saranac Lake Elks Club and Saranac Lake American Legion, a communicant of St. James Church and a member and past treasurer of the St Lawrence County Republican Committee.
He enjoyed golf and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Tim of Balmat; four daughters: Mrs. Jack (Sandra) Green and Mrs. Ronnie (Deborah) Reddick, both of Gouverneur, Mrs. Michael (Mary) Cardone of Flemington, N.J. and Mrs. David (Betsy) Ratliff of Cheektowaga; a sister, Elizabeth Goetz of Plattsburgh; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas, and three sisters: Alice DeZengremel, Shirley Naegele and Jacqueline Brailey.
Calling, hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur: A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin pastor, and Monsignor Gerald H. Service of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in New St. James Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St, James Catholic Church or to Edward John Noble Hospital.
