The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that began with the stock market crash of October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. The economy reached bottom in the winter of 1932–33, but conditions improved under Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal between 1933 and 1936. The recovery faltered when the government introduced austerity measures in 1936; manufacturing growth associated with World War II finally restored economic growth.
