Henderson Ives Rice was born in Milton, Vermont. In 1850, he left his wife and children with her family and went to join the California gold rush. He returned two years later, without success, and moved back to Milton. In 1855, he got a position managing the Franklin House in Franklin Falls. 1 He is buried in Brookside Cemetery.
