Inquiry Begun Into Blaze At Saranac Lake Farm

Saranac Lake.—State troopers are investigating the possible incendiary origin of a fire that destroyed three buildings, a team of horses, a quantity of livestock and a large amount of dairy equipment at the Hesseltine farm on the Bloomingdale road just outside of this village early Tuesday morning.

The flames, discovered shortly after 1 o clock, lighted the sky for miles and drew more than 100 volunteer workers as well as the Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale fire departments.

Starting in the hay barn, the fire was discovered by farmhands sleeping in a nearby cabin. By the time help had arrived the place was in flames and an adjacent horse stable had been ignited. Maurice Hesseltine, the proprietor of the farm, attempted to lead a team of valuable horses from their stalls, but the animals became panic stricken and rushed back into the flames.

The blaze then spread to a creamery, consuming the building and its valuable pasteurizing equipment. A hen roost, with 29 fowl in it, and a pen containing four pigs also were consumed before the animals could be liberated.

Firemen directed their efforts on the Hesseltine house, which they succeeded in saving despite its closeness to the creamery. A change in the wind aided the firemen in their efforts.

Mr. Hesseltine placed the damage loss at $7,000. a portion of which he said was covered by insurance.

Mr. Hesseltine was a former resident of Chateaugay and is well known throughout the community
