In 1952 Dr. John Barnwell was head of Tuberculosis Service of the Veterans' Administration. He had been a patient at Trudeau Sanatorium and a cottage-mate there of Dr. Norman Bethune.

Dr. John Barnwell

Dr. John Blair Barnwell of Blairstown, N, J., former director of research and medical education for the Veterans Administration died May 5 at University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Barnwell served a residency in tuberculosis at the Trudeau Sanatorium here and afterward was called to the medical school of the University of Michigan where he developed the tuberculosis unit, a new department in the school.

In 1946, the Veterans Administration asked him to direct its expanding tuberculosis program. He was made director of research for the VA in 1956 and held the post until he retired in 1960.

Among other honors, he had been awarded the Trudeau Medal of the National Tuberculosis Association. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters. A memorial service was held Friday at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.
