Prominent Saranac Lake Resident Dead

Residents from all sections of Northern New York, who knew him as an Adirondack pioneer, veteran contractor and hotel builder, paid final respects to John Edward Meagher, 80, of Saranac Lake last Saturday morning. The funeral was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Baker, 21 Academy street in the resort village, and in St. Bernard's church at 9 a.m. Meagher died at his daughter's home early last Thursday after an illness of three weeks.

Meagher was the builder of the old Del Monte hotel in Ampersand Avenue in that village, the Wawbeek hotel in the Tupper Lake road on Upper Saranac lake, and was the contractor for many private residences in and about the village. As a young man he operated the Del Monte hotel with his brother the late William Meagher.

Born at Mineville, August 15, 1858, Meagher was the son of the late Patrick and Bridget Meagher. His family settled at Elizabethtown while he was an infant. His parents remained in Elizabethtown but Mr. Meagher, his brothers and sisters went to Saranac Lake to make their homes.

He married Miss Bertha Buckley of Au Sable Forks, who died in 1898. After her death he went west, living for a decade in British Columbia and in Denver, Colo. He returned to Saranac Lake, where he took up his trade as a carpenter. He retired five years ago.

Surviving daughters in addition to Mrs. Baker are: Mrs. William Hennessey of Miami, Fla.; Mrs. Nicholas Poggi of Hawthorne, N. J., and Mrs. Harold Von Bramer of Kingsport, Tenn. Both Mrs. Poggi and Mrs. Von Bramer arrived at Saranac Lake before their father's death. He is also survived by a sister, Miss Lillian Meagher of Kingsport, Tenn.

Interment was in Pine Ridge cemetery.
