Born: ~ 1854 in Franklin County, a son of John Whitcher (~1814 - February 22, 1890) and Jennett ( ~1818 - December 23, 1864); His father died at John Jr.'s home in Brighton (The Adirondack News). The parents are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Malone.

John Whicher was one of the guides photographed by A. W. Durkee at Paul Smith's boathouse on August 8, 1884.
In 1885 John was a guide out of St. Regis Lake or Bloomingdale.
