In sixth grade, Henry Ives Baldwin wrote, "Katherine Mussen was a tall girl who sat in the back row where the seats were higher. I developed a strong liking for Katherine and used to walk her home. She lived beyond the N.Y. Central Station on the old road toward Colby Pond. Her father was a guide, I think. She had brothers or sisters and we sang "School Days" while someone played the piano. Then one day I went home with her at noon time and was an hour or so late getting home for dinner. My mother was hysterical and screamed and wept when she caught me as I came up the steps. She thought I must have been kidnapped or hurt or something. That put an end to my going home with Katherine."
