Sergeant Leo Richard Whitman was a World War II veteran, having served as a Technical Sergeant, Company B., 115 Infantry. He was with this unit when he was killed in France.

Military Funeral for Sgt. Leo Whitman
Leo Whitman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Whitman, who lost his life in World War II , was the first local boy to be brought home from overseas for reburial.
His body was brought to his parents home -Thursday, February 12th, where it lay under military guard of the Brushton and S.R.F. Posts Sunday. Sunday afternoon funeral services were held in Sand Hill Methodist Church, the Rev. McConnell officiating. The Legion funeral service was read by Commander of the St. Regis Falls Post, Wendall Smith and Commander Robert McDonald of the Brushton Post.
Pallbearers were Howard Moshier, Hollis Richards, Bernard Holmes, William Hutchins, Frederick Genaway and Kenneth Ploof. Chaplain was Earl LaPoint and firing squad was from St. Regis Falls. Boy Scouts carried flowers from the church to the cemetery. T. Sgt. Butler presented the flag which draped the casket to the mother.
The crowded church gave eloquent testimony of the sympathy which is felt by the whole community for the family of the deceased.
