Loren E. Miller worked for the Paul Smith's Electric Light and Power Company. He once owned the Donaldson Cottage on Church Street.

Miller, 83, of 7 Rockland Avenue, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born July 17, 1916 in Rochester, he was the son of Louis M. and Isabelle Morris Miller.

Mr. Miller moved to Saranac Lake in 1918. He attended local Schools and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1933. He attended Syracuse University, for two years and then transferred to the University of Idaho at Moscow, Idaho. He graduated from there in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in forestry. Following graduation, he worked for the. United States Forest Service in various capacities in Idaho, Montana and New Hampshire.

In 1942, he accepted a position with the Army Ordinance Department in the Pentagon Building in Washington, D.C. He was later transferred to the Tank-Automotive Center in Detroit as a supervisor of classification in the stock control branch.

Mr. Miller returned to Saranac Lake in 1944 and accepted a position of property record clerk with the former Paul Smith's Electric Co., later advancing to auditor and office manager. Upon merger with the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation in 1966, he became office supervisor of the Saranac Lake district. In 1968, he was assigned the additional responsibility as office supervisor of the Malone district. While at Niagara Mohawk, he was a member of the Speakers Bureau and the 25 Year club. He was a licensed insurance broker and real estate salesman. For several years, he operated a small passenger boat line on the Saranac chain of lakes.

He was an active member and past president pf the Saranac Lake Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a past president of the Saranac Lake Lions Club, the former director and finance chairman of the Saranac Lake Golf Club; a member of the Elks Lodge 1508, present director and former chapter chairman of the Saranac Lake - Lake Placid Chapter of the American Red-Cross, a former assistant scoutmaster and troop committee man and member of the Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake.

He operated his own machine shop and was an avid woodworker. Survivors include his wife, the former Elsie Landers Cody, who he married July 5, 1983; one sister, Ruth Esther Miller of Keene Valley, and several cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen O'Reilly Miller in 1978.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4. p.m. on Saturday at the ["Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Monts officiating. Interment will follow in the North Elba Cemetery, Lake Placid. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or the Saranac Lake Voluntary Health Association.
