Louise M. Carley was a substitute postmistress at the Lake Clear Post Office and other area post offices. She was very active in the Brighton-Harrietstown Grange.

LAKE CLEAR — Louise M. Carley, 89, a resident of Lake Clear for 65 years, died early today at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she had resided for five months.
Mrs. Carley was born in Swanton, Vt., a daughter of Alfred and Delia DeBarge Martell and moved to Lake Clear in 1898 at the age of 12. She also had lived in Saranac Lake for a number of years.
She was married in 1906 to George Carley who died in 1959.
From 1918 to 1945 Mrs. Carley worked at the Lake Clear Post Office and for the six years before that had substituted as a rural carrier for her husband when he was unable to get away from his work at their farm.
For 30 years she was the Lake Clear correspondent for The Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
She was a member and past office holder of the Brighton-Harrietstown Grange and a member of the county, state and national groups with which it is associated. She was named Granger of the Year in 1970. She also was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. John's Church.
A son, George, of Lake Clear, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren survive her.
Friends may call at the Fortune Funeral Home in Saranac Lake this evening after 7 o'clock and Thursday afternoon and evening. A Bible Vigil will be held at 8 p.m., Thursday. A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's in the Wilderness Church in Lake Clear. Interment will be in Harrietstown Cemetery.
