Manuel N. Kretis, an immigrant from Greece, came to Saranac Lake as a TB patient in 1942. His wooden novelty and souvenir business was the subject of a column titled "Adirondack rustic art maker" by Don Williams in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise on February 25, 2006.

Manuel N. Kretis

SARANAC LAKE — Manuel N. Kretis, 81, of 230 Broadway died Saturday morning, April 3, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

He was born July 1, 1900 in Greece the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Kretis.

Survivors include his wife, the former Maria Marinou of Saranac Lake; and a son, Nicholas of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Kretis had been a member of the Greek Merchant Marine and came to the United States in the 1920's when he left ship to recuperate from an illness.

He later contracted tuberculosis and came to Saranac Lake to cure in the 1930's.

He had owned and operated the M.K. Novelty Company here for 40 years, retiring in 1972.

There will be no calling hours nor funeral. Arrangements were with the Fortune Funeral Home.
