Modern Gardening at Saranac Lake

A new company, composed of well-known residents of this village, has just been started. The company is to be known as the Meadowbrook Farm Co., and; the officers are: President, George V. W. Duryee; vice-resident and general manager, A. S. McBean; secretary, treasurer and assistant manager, Ellwood Wilson. The directors are: Dr. E. R. Baldwin, Dr. H. M. Kinghorn, George V. W. Duryee, Arthur D. Moir, F. L. Creesy, A. S. McBean and Ellwood Wilson.The object of the company is to operate a thoroughly modern garden, poultry and dairy business for the supply of the highest class products to the residents, hotels and campers of Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and vicinity. Taking into consideration the large demand for such products, the distance which at present they must be brought and the prevailing high prices, such an undertaking should be a great success.
An option has already been secured on two hundred acres of land on the Lake Placid road and within easy reach of both villages. The Saranac & Lake Placid railroad crosses this tract, and supplies of feed, fertilizers etc., can be delivered within a few yards of the company's buildings. The land is exceptionally well watered, and about sixty acres are already under cultivation. A fine meadow supplies large quantities of hay, and there is some timber. Gardening and dairy experts have already examined tile tract and report that it is eminently suitable for the company's purposes.
There are a substantial barn and a good house with several sheds already on the premises. The company has a dairy herd of twelve cows and most of the necessary implements to begin business with. A poultry house with 200 hens, together with brooder and incubator houses, will be constructed at once and the poultry department will be in in operation this winter.
Raspberries, currents and asparagus will be planted and the land prepared for early spring vegetables and forage crops. A greenhouse and cold frames will also be provided. After snow falls, manure will be hauled from the village, ice cut, and all preparations made to run the plant to its fullest capacity next summer. As the land has some choice camp sites, second to none in the region, these will be leased to desirable persons who are not invalids.
