Monroe "Monk" Flagg was a World War II veteran and a bobsledder - called the "Dean of American Bobsledders" in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, February 9, 1961. He was a son of Mrs. William Harvey of 64 River Street.

Popular Area Sports Figure, Monroe Flagg, Dies at 53
Monroe A. Flagg, a champion bobsledder and an active participant in Saranac Lake affairs for many years, died last evening at Saranac Lake General Hospital. He was 53 years of age.
Mr. Flagg took part in competitive bobsledding from 1932 until two or three years ago and just last winter helped the Conservation Department during a shortage of drivers by taking a load of passengers from the half-mile at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

This month, Mr. Flagg was honored by Niagara Mohawk for 30 years service with that company and its predecessor, the Paul Smith's Electric Co. He was a lineman and was often called out to cut power lines for the Police and Fire Departments during accidents and fires and had been named an honorary member of both departments.
He also was a member of the BPOE Lodge 1508 of Saranac Lake, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club, and the Saranac Lake Bobsled Club. He was active in Little League baseball for many years and was a past commander of the Boat and Waterways Club.
Mr. Flagg was born Jan. 25, 1914, in AuSable Forks, a son of James and Ida Wilkins Flagg.
Survivors are his mother, now Mrs. William Harvey of Saranac Lake; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Washman of California; a brother, Morland, of Saranac Lake; two half-brothers, William Harvey, Jr. of Saranac Lake and Charles Harvey of Hicksville two half-sisters, Mrs. Lillian Woodard of Saranac Lake and Mrs. Geraldine [Esopa].
