Norman I. Arnold was one of the last north country civil war veterans, and a long-time resident of the area. He served in Company C, 118th Regiment.

C, August 17, 1862; promoted corporal, August 29, 1862; sergeant and first sergeant, no dates; mustered in as second lieutenant, May 22, 1865; mustered out with company, June 13, 1865, at Richmond, Va. CIVIL WAR VETERAN DEAD AT AGE OF 92
One of the last north country civil war veterans, Norman I. Arnold, 92, died last Thursday at the home of his son in Bloomingdale.
The aged veteran was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., August 15, 1840, son of Ely and Polly Butric Arnold, and came to the Adirondacks when four years old with his parents who made their home in Jay and a few years later in the town of Franklin.
When 22, Norman Arnold enlisted Company C, 118th infantry, of the New York Volunteers at Plattsburg with his brother, Ely, Jr. Their regiment was assigned to special duty in Virginia. Several months after their enlistment the company took part in the battle of Drewry's Bluff in which Norman was wounded by rifle fire and his brother killed. Norman's wounds incapacitated him for further infantry work and he was assigned to a hospital staff for the duration of the war.
When peace declared, Arnold returned to his former home in Jay. He married in March, 1869, Ann Goodspeed of St. Armand, in the village of Bloomingdale. In the old stage coach days he was manager of Franklin Falls hotel and later engaged in the mercantile business and some years afterwards became a farmer.
Mr. Arnold was one of the remaining three members of Massena post, G. A. R., and took part in its memorial day services for many years.
Services last Saturday afternoon were attended by the last two veterans of that section, Nelson Foster and Sylvanus Paye, conducted by Rev. Lloyd Nelson in the Methodist church. Interment was in St. Armand cemetery.
Survivors are his three sons, R. E. Arnold of Bloomingdale; I. N. Arnold of Franklin Falls, and B. G. Arnold of Massena, and one daughter, Miss Adelaide Arnold of Katonah.
