Ogden Mills Reid was the son of of Whitelaw Reid and Elizabeth Mills Reid. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelors degree in 1904 and a law degree in 1907. He worked on the New York Tribune from 1908 to 1912, when, on his father's death he was named editor. In 1924, he purchased the New York Herald, creating the New York Herald Tribune. The new paper took eight years to become profitable, but turned a profit in 1932 and remained profitable until Reid's death in 1947.
Reid served as Commodore of the St. Regis Yacht Club from 1930 to 1932.
When his mother died in 1931, he inherited Camp Wild Air and a three million dollar trust fund.
