Patrick J. H. McKenty was raised in Onchiota and Bloomingdale. As a child, he spent many seasons at the Adirondack-Florida School, Meenagha Lodge on Clear Pond in Onchiota (where his parents first met). He would later help his father as caretaker when the camp was bought by Buster Crabbe. Patrick graduated from Saranac Lake Central School in 1947 and shortly thereafter entered the U.S. Navy training program. Among other jobs, he worked at the Triangle Lumber Mill in Onchiota and at the Buster Crabbe camp as a caretaker.
