Robert Coleman was a son and the oldest child of Robert H. Coleman and Edith Coleman of 33 Church Street. Robert attended Yale, but left in 1905 to work as an engineer on the Panama Canal, later settling in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Robert Coleman was a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, in the AEF. He first served with Co. G, 32nd Infantry; next with Co. D, 1st Infantry; and lastly served as Instructor, 3rd Corps Schools. On April 28, 1917, he went to Vancouver Barracks, Washington; thence to Angel Island, California; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Camp Gordon, Georgia; and Camp Pike, Arkansas. On August 30, 1918, he sailed for France on S.S. "Katoomba," embarking at New York. On June 18, 1919, he returned to the USA on "Agamemnon," landing at Hoboken, N.J., and was discharged on June 19, 1919. His name is listed on the World War I Veterans’ Memorial Park at Church and River Streets. 1
