SARANAC LAKE - Robert H. Stevens of the DeChantal Apartments died Sunday afternoon at the Saranac Lake General Hospital.

Mr. Stevens, who was 99 years old was born March 27, 1876 in Brasher Falls the son of Walter and Myra Caverely Stevens.

He was married to his wife, Ruby in 1916. She died in November, 1974.

He is survived by a nephew, Robert Stevens of Hawthorne, Ca.; four nieces: Mrs. Heath McDowell of Old Saybrook. Conn., Mrs. Ellen Denise of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Milton Hall, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, and Miss Sandra Stevens of New York City.

Mr. Stevens was the manager of a McCollums Hotel for 10 years and at Meacham Lake for seven years. He was superintendent of the Saranac Inn for 18 years, caretaker at Litchfield Park in Tupper Lake for three years and had been employed by the Lake Placid Club for 15 years. He was highway superintendent for the Town of Santa Clara for 17 years.

He was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. There will be no calling hours. The funeral will be Sunday. January 18 at the Fortune Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Snyder, pastor of St. Luke's officiating. Interment will be in McCollum's cemetery in May.

Robert Stevens 98 years old

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake Senior citizens honored Robert H. Stevens on his 98th birthday with a luncheon at the Adult Center at the Elks Club. He was given an engraved plaque, presented by Clyde Cheeseman which reads, "Good Citizen Award to Robert H. Stevens on his 98th birthday, March 27, 1975. Given by the, Saranac Lake Senior Citizens."

A welcome was given by Barbara Chapin, director of the Adult Center, and greetings by the Senior Citizens Club president, Mabel O'Reilly. The invocation was given by the Rev. Father Philip Snyder. When the birthday cake was brought in, all sang, "Happy Birthday."

Mr. Stevens' niece, Mrs. Keith McDowell, and her husband of Old Saybrook Conn. came for the celebration which was also attended by Mrs. Joan Hough of Bloomingdale and Mr. Stevens' close friends.

He was born March 27, 1877 in Brasher Falls. He attended grade and high school at Brasher Falls and Stockholm Union schools. During his early life he managed his family's home farm at Brasher Falls. When he was 22 years old he came to this section of the Adirondacks. In 1916 he married Ruby Hutchins Donahue who taught elementary schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York State.

Mr. Stevens' experience was mostly in the hotel business. He and Mrs. Stevens resided at McColloms for 10 years where he was the manager, at Meacham Lake for seven years where he was also hotel manager. They then moved to Saranac Inn Hotel on Upper Saranac Lake where he was superintendent manager for 18 years. From 1955 to 1958 they lived at Litchfield Park Chateau at Tupper Lake where Mr. Stevens was caretaker.

He was connected with the Lake Placid Club for 15 years until he retired. During his career he was also highway commissioner for the Town of Santa Clara for 17 years.

He and Mrs. Stevens were also interested in their local community and in civic affairs and contributed in every way they could as good citizens. They bought a home on Bloomingdale Avenue [74 Bloomingdale Avenue] in 1948 where they lived until May 1974 when they moved to the DeChantal Apartments at 20 Church Street. Mrs. Stevens died last November. Mr. Stevens is still living at the DeChantal.

He is a very astute gentleman, a staunch member of St. Luke's Episcopal church, and a former member of the Malone Elks club.

He is very interested in local, state and government affairs, reads the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, the Malone Evening Telegram, the Tupper Lake Herald, the Syracuse Post Standard and the New York Daily News religiously.
