SECOND GRADE, MRS. RUTH SMITH…

Animals In Winter

Winter is coming. Animals get ready for winter. Some go away to warmer places. Some store food and stay. Squirrels store nuts. Bears store food by eating and eating. They get fat by eating so much. Bears use this fat to live on when they are hibernating.

Skunks, chipmunks, woodchucks and raccoons hibernate. All winter long they will not eat. They will not grow. They will sleep in their homes until spring. Snakes hibernate. Frogs and turtles hibernate in the mud near the ponds.

Some animals live the same way all year long. The deer and fox live the same way in winter. They have to find their food every day. Farm animals do not store food. The farmer feeds them. The farmer takes good care of them. The barn keeps them sheltered all winter.

Our bulletin board has pictures of winter sleepers.
