TRAGIC AUTO ACCIDENT
Samuel Martin Killed and His Wife Thought Fatally Injured.
A N. Y. Central train at 9 o'clock Sunday night struck an automobile at the crossing south of Rainbow, in which Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Martin and daughter, Kaola, of Bloomingdale, were riding. Mrs. Martin was driving at the time and evidently failed to hear the train until too late to escape. Mr. Martin was instantly killed and his wife probably fatally injured, but the daughter was only slightly hurt. Martin was a cousin of Phelps and Paul Smith, was 54 years old and a farmer. Mrs. B. Muncil, of Gabriels, is a daughter. His body was taken to undertaking parlor at Saranac Lake and his wife was taken to the Saranac Lake General Hospital in a critical condition. Miss Martin was taken to her sister's home near Gabriels.
At last report Mrs. Martin was still unconscious, her skull being apparently fractured. Her right leg was broken in four places and her left leg in two places. She also had a terrible scalp wound four or five inches long above the forehead and a severe contusion on the back of the head. Mr. Martin's head and an arm were completely severed. Clifford Marshall was also with the party and escaped with only a few contusions. Martin was a brother of Hugh Martin, of Norman Ridge, and the whole life of deceased had been spent in that vicinity. His funeral was held there this morning.
