Aged Guide Celebrates 82nd Birthday
Sylvester Otis, famed as a guide throughout the entire Adirondacks, and still active at his chosen work in the Paul Smith's section, celebrated his eighty-second birthday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Cochran in Saranac Lake last week Wednesday.
Mr. Otis served for three years in the Civil War as a member of Major Gibbon's sharpshooters. He was a pioneer when the late Paul Smith began the erection of his famous hotel in what was then practically an uncharted wilderness.

NOTED GUIDE DIES AT SARANAC LAKE
Sylvester Otis, a veteran of the civil war and noted Adirondack guide and woodsman, died at Saranac Lake a few days ago, aged 84 years. He was stricken with heart failure during the night and died before morning. Up to the night of his fatal illness Otis had never complained of illness, and was unusually active for a man of his advanced years.
